SNK vs CAPCOM for C64/C128 - Stronger Edition is a non-profit, freeware and unlicensed game created by fans and based on the original Neo Geo Pocket Color game called “SNK vs CAPCOM: Match of the Millennium”.

There are two evil fighters that want to conquer this world: Vega & Geese. They want to team up together and recruit the strongest fighters and use them to create an evil army. A tournament is the perfect way to hide their evil purpose: with the promise of fame and glory, they attract the attention of the strongest fighters all over the world. Many of them are aware of the goal that Vega and Geese want to pursue, but others are unaware of the fate that may await them.

The Stronger Edition includes a total of 32 fighters and it's distributed as a MagicDesk 2 (MD2) CRT image file (2MBytes).  It can be run on VICE/Denise emulators and real hardware.

More info on the MD2 project and further instructions on how to obtain a physical cartridge can be found at the following link:

Hey, I hope you don't mind, but I placed your awesome game into the best C64 homebrew games of 2025.

Hi Jamie, thank you very much! 😊

You are most welcome.

I've been trying to make a real MD2 cart using the C128 edition.  However my test cart does not seem to work.  It just boots to a screen with a BLACK border and blue background.  I converted the CRT image to a BIN using cartconv and flashed the ROM.  My MD2 board is configured correctly for GMOD3.  Am I missing something?

NM...its actually a 16k cart configuration.  I just assumed GMOD3 because the image was 2MB.  Working now!  If I launch it on a C128 is it automatically in TURBO MODE?

Yes, on a real C128 the scrolling version of the game will run correctly.

Just to be clear, what will I see as a the difference?  The backgrounds scroll?

Yes

Hello, I’ve just downloaded the Stronger Edition for my C64 equipped with an Ultimate II+L cartridge. I’ve tried all the versions you have available, but as soon as I launch it, the message “This command is not supported on this architecture” appears on the screen. How can I fix this issue? For the record, the Standard Edition works correctly.

For now, MD2 file format is supported by few cartridge emulators, such as TeensyROM. Check another comment in this thread for more info (the comments from Digital Man user). I hope that soon all the other vendors will include this format in their products.

Very cool game, even with two players. Our German-language review from 2023 can be found in our recorded livestream starting at 01:07:12. English subtitles are also available. Subscription to our YouTube and Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂

Thank you! Play with the new version too, the Stronger Edition :)

Unfortunately don't work with VICE 3.6 and don't want to update it yet, as it works very stable with our system. 🙁 Time will tell if and when it is unavoidable.

You can use Denise emulator. You can play the non-scrolling version (C64 version) on it since Denise doesn't support C128 emulation yet.

Denise already has a function called "C128 in C64 mode" in it's "System" menue, since some months. When this is turned on, also the C128 version (with the scrolling) works without a problem. And the game runs better than in VICE, by the way, because you can turn-off the input-lag in Denise. Normally, the game should only be recommended for Denise now, because in fighting-games, things like an input-lag kills half of the fun and VICE sadly has this problem, as long as there's no RunAhead function available there. But okay, alternatively to Denise, people can also use RetroArch, where you can set a RunAhead for the running VICE emulation. Why such a feature isn't built into the regular VICE versions, is beyond me. It would be advantageous in every C64 game.

Hi there, I hope you don't mind, but I put this awesome release in with this months best homebrew releases.

Thank you very much, Jamie! Great video! ^^

You are most welcome :)

Which 2 button controllers are supported?

Any controller that uses standard fire and PotX signals are supported. I don't now the names, but I think that if you browse them on Internet you can find them.

I assume there are no cartridge emulators that can run MD2 images?  KFF(2), or UII+?

TeensyROM supports MD2 cartridge files:

https://github.com/SensoriumEmbedded/TeensyROM/blob/main/docs/General_Usage.md#loading-programs-and-emulating-roms

Do you actually have it running from the TR?  I get a hardware error with mine.

I don't have the TR, sorry. If you have problems with that, contact the cartridge creator from the link I gave you.

Already on it.  I assumed it was supposed to work but the "Unsupported hardware (85)" message appears so must be something else going on here.

Maybe you can try with the other crt file (the Denise one), maybe the TeensyROM is using the CRT ID 79. Else you have to ask to TeensyROM's creator where is the problem.

Great new game. I've also added it to my new video along with other recently released games. Hope you like it.

Awesome game!

very good

unfortunaly my x128 (v3.9) says it can't recognice the cartidge (id 85), wahts going wrong?

Hi, you should use latest ad-hoc build version of VICE 3.9, that is VICE 3.9 r45695 or higher version in order to run the game.

ahh, thx. i try using

3.9 r45780

(GTK3 3.24.50, GLib 2.86.0, Cairo 1.18.4, Pango 1.56.4)

and now it works. perfect.

sadly i get dependancy problems on linux trying to use 3.9 so had to give up, i'll just have to wait for the flatpak version to eventually update 1 day which will include all the right stuff needed without breaking my system.

what exactly does the crt need in 3.9 that isnt available in 3.8?

Basically it requires the MD2 cartridge format support, that is available only from 3.9 r45695 and on. If you have problems with running VICE I suggest you to ask to the VICE development team how to solve your problem.

Awesome update, congratulations 🎉 on the release and for making it over on Metal Game Solid https://metalgamesolid.com/systems/computers/c64/snk-vs-capcom-on-a-c64-this-shouldnt-be-possible-but-it-is/
